Characteristics

Katahdin Hair sheep are a low maintenance breed that are well known for their maternal skill, parasite resistance, and mild-flavored lamb.  Far more than simply a sheep in goat’s clothing, Katahdins have several characteristics that make them ideal for a variety of management approaches and environments.  Our ewes range in size from 120 lbs to slightly over 200 lbs, though we prefer a ewe in the 140 lb to 170 lb range for feed efficiency, as feed costs are our largest expense.  Each fall, our sheep develop a thick winter coat, but they shed out completely each spring.  Our goal is that all lambs shed their lamb coat during their first summer on pasture.
